From the recording ALONE AND ME
A reflective folk song inspired by childhood memories of repeatedly asking to accompany my father to work. Moving between childhood perspective and adult reflection, “Alone and Me” explores affection, memory and the simple longing to be wherever Dad was.
Lyrics
Alone and Me
I was sitting alone on the front porch
I was only four...
Dad was leaving for work on the railroad
The clock on the wall struck two
Dad... can I come too
The radio sang, ‘I wanna hold your hand
Can I hold your hand
Then it sang, ‘top of the world’
If you are here, it’s true
Dad... can I come too
Now, Dad, it’s still
alone and me
Now I see it all
differently
Every moment back then
made this man in me
Dad... can I come too
Every day I hear the trains roll by
I wait for your footsteps too
Watch the shadows on the wall
Till you come home... mmm
Now, Dad, it’s still
alone and me
Dad... it’s me
Dad... it all seems alone without you. Dad... can I come to...
(Whisper) can I come too...
